Outstanding volunteer receives Australia Day honour

Outstanding local volunteer Victoria de Haas has been recognised in the Australian Day honours, receiving the medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).

The Federal member for Brand, Gary Gray, said Ms de Haas, of Orelia, had receiving her award for her service through the Activ Foundation to people with an intellectual disability.

Ms de Haas has been a member of the Activ Foundation since 1972 and became an Honorary Life Governor in 1993. She was secretary of the Rockingham/Kwinana Group from 1974-2004.

She was also involved in establishing identityWA between 1977-1982 and has been made an Honorary Life Member.

“Ms de Haas has been a tireless worker as a volunteer for a range of organisations,” Mr Gray said.

“These include St Vincent de Paul Auxiliary,Noalimba special school, Fremantle, St Vincent’s Primary School, Kwinana, Iona Presentation College andMedina Primary School.

“Volunteers like Ms de Haas are the heartbeat of our community.”
