282 NEW HOMES FOR ROCKINGHAM, KWINANA AND MANDURAH
Thursday, 2 February 2012
Local member of Federal Parliament Gary Gray today announced that 282 new homes have been built in the Rockingham, Kwinana and Mandurah under the Labor Government’s $5.6 billion Social Housing Initiative.
“I am happy to say that our community has seen 282 new homes built from the Australian Government’s investment in affordable housing at a total cost of $72.6 million,” Mr Gray said.
“Developments like these are important in helping to provide a safe and secure place to call home for some of our community’s most vulnerable people.
“Not only do these homes offer stable accommodation, they are also designed to assist residents to remain connected and supported in our community.
“As the local member, I am particularly proud to be part of a Government committed to giving people who are most in need a place to call their own,” Mr Gray said.
As of 1 January, more than 17,000 new homes have been delivered to vulnerable Australians across the country of which more than 1,700 new homes have been built in Western Australia.
“These new homes will put a roof over the heads of young families wanting to get a start in their own homes and skilled workers helping to boost our economy as well as vulnerable Australians who are at risk of homelessness, including people with disability, older people, Indigenous Australians and families escaping violence,”
Mr Gray said.
“They will not only provide an affordable and safe place but give peace of mind to Australians who are struggling to find a stable place to live.”
Across Australia more than half of the 17,000 dwellings have been provided to people experiencing homelessness and over 40 per cent went to senior Australians.
“Around 44 per cent of the people now living in these homes have a disability, 14 per cent are Indigenous Australians, and six per cent are families escaping domestic and family violence.
“Australia is in the midst of a housing shortage, especially affordable housing, and this Government will continue to work tirelessly to provide vulnerable people with a place to call their own,” Mr Gray said.
The Australian Government’s $5.6 billion investment under the Social Housing Initiative represents the single largest investment in social housing ever undertaken by an Australian Government.
